ROYAL INSTITUTE OF PAINTERS IN WATER COLOURS
The Villa Streccius where the exhibition was held
In 2008 the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours were invited to exhibit in South West Germany as part of the region's Kultursommer 2009 festival, celebrating the best of British culture. The gallery in the Villa Streccius is situated in Landau in the Rheinland-Pfalz.
The exhibition's emphasis was on the role that British watercolour has played in the development of the medium and it effectively demonstrated why there is a growing interest in watercolour painting throughout Europe. The paintings on show were a mix of RI member's work and paintings by watercolour painters from the region.
At the opening ceremony, attended by many of the exhibiting artists, speeches of welcome were given by the hosts, the organisers, and the British Consul. The Secretary of the RI, Andy Wood, opened the exhibition and gave gifts of specially engraved glass to the hosts.
The President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Ronald Maddox, and the Vice President, Tony Hunt, attended the closing ceremony of the exhibition.
