About the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours

The RI was founded in 1831 as the New Society of Painters in Water Colours its aim to promote the art of watercolour in Britain. From the beginning the New Society followed a policy of showing non-members' work alongside that of members. The RI continues that policy today in its annual open exhibition of watercolour painting at the Mall Galleries, London.

The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours is a registered charity, receiving no Arts Council grant or government subsidy for its important contribution to the mainstream of British art.
